چکیده

We have measured production yields and longitudinal momentum distributions of projectile-like fragments in the reaction 129 Xe + 27 Al at an energy of E lab =790 A·MeV. Production cross sections higher than expected from sys-tematics were observed for nuclei in the neutron-deficient tails of the isotopic distributions. A comparison with previously measured data from the fragmentation of 136 Xe ions shows that the production yields strongly depend on the neutron excess of the projectile with respect to the line of β-stability. The momentum distributions exhibit a dependence on the fragment neutron-to-proton ratio in isobaric chains, which was not expected from systematics so far. This can be interpreted by a higher excitation of the projectile during the formation of neutron-deficient fragments.

Characterization of the effects of nonspecific xenon-protein interactions on (129)Xe chemical shifts in aqueous solution: further development of xenon as a biomolecular probe.

The sensitivity of (129)Xe chemical shifts to weak nonspecific xenon-protein interactions has suggested the use of xenon to probe biomolecular structure and interactions. The realization of this potential necessitates a further understanding of how different macromolecular properties influence the (129)Xe chemical shift in aqueous solution. Toward this goal, we have acquired (129)Xe NMR spectra...

Isomeric effects in ion-induced fragmentation of α- and β-alanine

We have investigated the dissociation of αand βalanine following impact of slow multicharged ions, namely He, He, O and Xe at 10 keV per charge unit. The collision products were analyzed using a reflectron-type time-of-flight mass spectrometer. In general, for a given projectile, ionization of both alanine-isomers gives rise to similar fragmentation patterns. However, significantly different pe...

Rotaxane-mediated suppression and activation of cucurbit[6]uril for molecular detection by (129)Xe hyperCEST NMR.

We report a method for blocking interactions between (129)Xe and cucurbit[6]uril (CB6) until activation by a specific chemical event. We synthesized a CB6-rotaxane that allowed no (129)Xe interaction with the CB6 macrocycle component until a cleavage event released the CB6, which then produced a (129)Xe@CB6 NMR signal. This contrast-upon-activation (129)Xe NMR platform allows for modular synthe...

Hyperpolarized 3He and 129Xe magnetic resonance imaging apparent diffusion coefficients: physiological relevance in older never‐ and ex‐smokers

Noble gas pulmonary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is transitioning away from (3)He to (129)Xe gas, but the physiological/clinical relevance of (129)Xe apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) parenchyma measurements is not well understood. Therefore, our objective was to generate (129)Xe MRI ADC for comparison with (3)He ADC and with well-established measurements of alveolar structure and functi...
